I'm not sure if there are many long termers here (by long termers I mean original Age of Empires 2 fans who were around with its inception) but the game actually had different graphics to what you see in the final game. This version was scrapped, and to be honest with you I find the original graphics quite appealing. I will try and find the original magazine pictures and scan if for you.

Lots of good stuff today. It's out of my hands to discuss, so for now I'm going to just chill out.

Btw, I've heard Rasteve say that it is possible to add more lines to the language.dll or languagex.dll. But he never explained clearly how it can be done. Does anybody here know that? I can imagine that for example the age of chivalry mod ran out of dll lines too.

Also, does anybody know how to add more frames to an existing slp? The current largest slp in rise of rome is 100 frames long (for the tech icons), but I actually need more than 100, mostly for the unit icons.

Was this domain ever in use (for the Gameboy version perhaps)?

Another question.

In aoe1 you can use the question marker to see the description of units and buildings. It isn't hard to find the corresponding language line.

I expect this language.dll line is specified in this data line:
civ_*_unit_*_help_language:

The problem is, how are the two connected.

Examples:

Language line of slinger description is 39814
The help_language line is -25722

Another example: 39588 matches with -25948 and 39776 matches with -25760.

My question is how is the help_language number generated. At first I thought about this idea by Rasteve, but I can't figure it out. I expect there is some conversion to hexadecimal being used.

Or am I wrong and does the help_language line refer to the external help and not the ingame help.

This has both AoE and AoE III listed. Would make sense that Microsoft also looked into creating a mobile version of AoK.

...

Whilst making this post I checked the mentioned website with the "Waybackmachine" internetarchiver. The site seems to have been active in 2006 and has some interesting stuff. It's indeed a version of AoK for cellphones. Review found here.

I've been on vacation for a week guys and I just got back. I'm not sure what the deal with the domain name, but I'll ind out. (ok, I see it was for a 2005 cell phone game.. and of course a 2005-6 cell phone doesn't even compare to today's smart phones.

Ok, I feel real bad for teasing everyone as much as I did, because ... hypothetically speaking of course... if something wonderful did happen that involved other people ... I probably couldn't be the one to let the news out in a unofficial way. So either I have nothing of substance to report, or I have something of substance to report but I can't talk about it freely until someone official reports it. I should have seen that set of outcomes coming, and spared everyone the roller coaster ride of wondering. And if it was the latter case then I would ask everyone here to not cross-post or let the speculation spread outside this thread until such time as it was speculation no more. If there was something awesome to speculate about that is.

He's saying he probably shouldn't have said anything about the possible whatever-it-is, as game-developers insist on a lot of "quiet" about their developments.

Something is probably happening, but he is likely not the one to be saying something about it. He may know something about it though.

He is not in the position to give official news. Like if you were to ask him about the game he's working on at the moment with his day job... he's not allowed to talk about it with us. I imagine he's under NDA.

Here's a Wayback Machine link. I searched it on there before I read Dead_End's post. It looks like the site went from "actual site" status to "generic register-this-domain" site between July '08 and October '09.

Now tell us something useful, Matt... or I'll... I'll... I'll march to Seattle and throw peat at you!

Hey Matt, gotta say, I'm a big fan of ES, it's probably the one game studio I followed as a kid. What you guys did was really special.

I was directed here because I posted a question about how Ensemble Studios managed their tilesets to create elevation and so forth. You answered that on page 2 of the thread but it seems like you basically had the map editor calculate everything from blending to how to present the elevation.

So question: I am working on an indie game and I have been using Tiled so far--should I just create my own map editor like several other indies have done, like these

There's definitely sufficient interest to get this thread to 1000 posts. Just look at all the lurkers coming out of the woodwork!!

John, the map editor (scenario editor) always was integrated into the rest of the genie engine for a couple reasons. First was the lack of alternative tools at the time, but even more important to AoE & AoK was the degree of specialization needed in the editor. Since the game and engine code was under constant development, the scenario editor needed to use the same code so it could always be current with development.

And I am one of them! After an 8 year hiatus on this game, I'm loving it more this time, especially AoKH and this thread, been reading it start to finish non-stop. If all the work Mr. Pritchard is doing pays off, this will be incredible. Eagerly awaiting every post.

Some very insightfull stuff from Mark Terrano, Lead Designer of AoK and design director of Hidden Path (were MattP also works):

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/x319b/iama_game_designer_mark_terrano_ama/

Like Matt, he doesn't sound opposed to a spiritual successor to AoE2.

I wish you guys could (or let's say MS let you) do an AoE4...

You surely know that there is already AoE 4, it's called Age of Empires Online. By looking at its files you'll notice the number 4 there (at least when it was closed beta).

So let's hope for AoE 5.
