I'm not sure if there are many long termers here (by long termers I mean original Age of Empires 2 fans who were around with its inception) but the game actually had different graphics to what you see in the final game. This version was scrapped, and to be honest with you I find the original graphics quite appealing. I will try and find the original magazine pictures and scan if for you.

AoEO started development as AoE4 (hence the file naming), but AoE also started out as Tribe or Dawn of Man. That doesn't make it Tribe, does it?

Yeah, AOEO is a spin-off, like Age of Mythology (which was made in between Age of Empires 2 and Age of Empires 3)

Matt, you did work on AoM, didn't you? Would it be possible for you to write a widescreen patch for AoM/TT if you had access to the code?

Getting that game in high res on Steam with working (!) cd keys would be a blast. I'm just daydreaming, though...

You can get a shortcut and add something x1920y1080 for aom. Can't remember exactly how you did it. Ofcourse you could change the numbers, but I used full HD resolution when I did it

Didn't know about that

Hmm with Games Com coming nearer, how big are the possibilities to get an update? After waiting for so long, I'm getting nervous whether we're getting something after all.

I didn't know that! Sounds cool though, was it planned to be animated? How far did it come before they quit?

The Age of Empires movie never got out of the 'concept being shopped around' stage I believe. It seemed like it kicked around for a couple years. Envisioned as an old-school 'cast-of-thousands' ancient epic I gathered.

/but my memory on that is pretty faint

I wonder what the plotline would be. Probably one of the campaigns, that's about all you could do. RTS games don't necessarily make the best movies, since the gameplay focuses on a nation (or several) rather than one or several people.

Standard Procedure in Hollywood is that by the time they get done, the actual script differs from the source book/play/game/etc more than it is faithful to it.

In a parallel universe, there is an AoE movie, AoE2 has a second expansion, AoE3 would have been released just recently, being what SC2 is to SC1 and the MMO guys play World of Empires instead of WoW...

I wonder if the removal of the 1.0c patch from the Microsoft age of empires 2 website has anything to do with this?

Considering the Age of Kings one is still there, are they replacing the Conquerors with a new one perhaps?

Though a lot of stuff has been recently removed from the old microsoft sites, for example some stuffs for aoe1 and ror.

Edit: I can't seem to even find the official website for The Conquerors

Maybe they are killing of the last pieces of support to this awesome game? Or there really is a new official patch coming. Why would they leave people patchless before a new one comes?

re: missing patches and pages

I'm going to ask around tomorrow and see if I can find out what the deal is. All I can say is don't worry at this time.

I really think a huge priority into advancing AoC (especially for the guys who did the Userpatch) should be working out how to modify the .exe to allow 400x400 maps. I have been wanting larger maps for SO long. The idea of having a world map or a map of Europe big enough to have huge colonies and the ability to make a scenario where it's like a true conquering of an entire continent would be absolutely incredible. THAT is what I think modders should strive for. I think the userpatch guys have modded the .exe in their patch previously, I just think that should be something to strive for.

Any tips, Matt, to make this something feasible? You did it once before as evidenced by the screenshots, I'd love to see something realistically done about this as opposed to it just being a pipe dream. Optimism, people!

I agree! Even though most of the stuff fixed in the UserPatch, this would be an awesome feature.

Increasing map sizes would probably be just changing some data types to bigger ones. I assume there are lots of those which would need to be changed, or it'd be an easy change. Also there might be some checking system for map size limits. So I believe that if all those needed data types and limits were found, we would soon have bigger maps. AI may become an obstacle if bigger maps create too many calculations (loads of lag). Correct me if I'm wrong.

I can already imagine epic multiplayer games with 1024x1024 maps, for example, although the next data type would allow maps up to 65536x65536.
