Microsoft has unveiled the trailer for a 'definitive edition' remake of Age of Empires 2 at their 2019 E3 Briefing.
You can view the trailer now!

Trailer Link

The trailer doesn't reveal much, but keen eyes will see loads of quality of life improvements, including complete redesigns of all unit and building graphics, full 32 bit colour, increased frames for smoother animations, destruction graphics for buildings, better water and terrain rendering, and even some sneak peaks at the four new civs and some unique units! Reddit users have broken down the trailer shot by shot, with a pretty great summary of all that can be seen here.

Join the discussion on Reddit, or sound off in the comments below. Is this DE enough to get you to buy yet another remake of your favourite RTS?

It could have been worse.

I will try it out for sure, but I can't really see myself switching over. Particularly now that the few modding skills I have acquired go out the window with the introduction of modern 3D graphics.

Is it real 3D? Aoe1: DE still use sprites I think. Wouldn't they have to make huge changes to the game engine to use real 3D graphics?

Personally I think the game is too bright, but I will definitely buy it. Hopefully it will be more polished than the HD Edition was.

I don't really know either way but, yeah, it makes more sense that they would use sprites with many more frames, rather than rework the engine. Still, even if older mods are somehow compartible, they will look very much out of place.

The graphics are done the same way as the origin, 3D models rendered as 2D sprites. Apparently now though, there are more angles and more frames per angle, so modding in a new unit would be a huge effort. We will have to see though.

I was grinning ear to ear while watching the trailer and that gameplay video. I'm really excited, and I'll probably be getting back into this game once it comes out.

After the AoE DE debacle I was ready to write anything FE makes off and ignore AoK DE. But now that seemingly substantial updates and progress is happening, they earned enough credit now so that I will check it out at release. Maybe I will make a writeup on the new campaign, although I can already see it being cakewalk mode for all the people who didnt play AoK for 15+ years now. I dont really care about graphics but they didnt look bad in the trailer.

These units are indeed still 2D sprites, now with 32 directions instead of 8.

For those who want to see a bit more, here's a Cysion interview with some gameplay

Does anybody know whether this will be playable on Mac? I really think they should consider it as many people these days use macs a lot more than they did back when the original game was released.

The system requirements are unfortunately quite hefty. Certainly not extreme by modern PC gaming standards, but a lot more restrictive that the HD remake or the CD version are.

Part of AoE2's charm has been that everyone pretty much can run it, so I imagine a decent portion of the fanbase will be a bit inconvenienced by this.

I wish they give us a more powerful scenario editor, something of warcraft level!

Couldn't it be part of the Windows 10 requirement? They are pretty similar
