Dear community,

The Steam Workshop has made it easier than ever to share modifications and scenarios. This comfort however does come at a price. Recently we have noticed a number of cases where users uploaded works without specific consent of the original author.
Though Steam gives us the option to report such files, we have yet to see the actual removal of said files. Which is where you, the community, come in.

What we want you to do is to report any files of which it is clear that the uploader was not the original author or was not given permission to share the files. Additionally, it would be great if you would post links to files you suspect are cases of plagiarism. We hope that a mass-reporting of plagiarized files will lead to a faster response of Steam Support.

Please encourage other users to refrain from uploading files they did not create. If you feel that a certain excellent file from the Blacksmith is missing in the Steam Workshop, please alert a moderator and we will deal with it.

I don't mind if people share my work.
It's not about sharing, it's about people taking credit (or not giving any credit)

I found this on the workshop .......

It seems very similar to Dave3377's spearmen pack.

Never mind that is Dave ._.

If anyone has any suggestions for files which should be made available at the Workshop, please let us know. We'll make sure to contact the right people and get things carried out in a correct manner.

Reported the Subtle HD Terrain mod on the Steam workshop for plagiarizing Tetsuo and Matt's work without permission.

I appreciate it, but that one's a bit grey. The stuff they borrowed from me has been used so much by so many people at this point the uploader probably doesn't even know I am the creator. Sebastien's cliffs are at least credited to him. I personally wouldn't care enough to do anything about it myself.

On further investigation, he actually does credit another mod for my graphics. It's that first guy who did the plagiarizing it seems. Meh, what are you gonna do. I've created something like 300-500 graphics, I can't keep track of them all anyway.

Thanks for posting this topic, a while back I thought it would be great to see if a list could be made of the mods, files, etc that had expressly put in permission for them to be shared as this would make it easier than clicking through tons of files. Maybe adding a mandatory option in submission for this is possible?

This applies for every (still active) game forum on HG - not just Aoe 2 as the problem is probably the same for all the games.

Besides Steam there is also Moddb.com which is a great site - organized, good design, feature and content rich. I see some of the games on Heavengames have some downloads there too.

Aoe 2 Aok
Aoe 2 TC exp
Aoe 2 TFE exp
Aoe 2 HD

I've been posting some stuff there with the goal of giving credit and cross-promotion - mentioning and linking to Heavengames whenever possible as HG has a forum and MDB does not (only comments and groups) so both sites have their pros and cons and can be thus utilized.

You can take a look at the HG Rise of Legends forum and MDB page to see my recent work on that game, maybe I'll get around to doing the same for other (mainly lesser known) games.

So keeping an eye on Moddb also might be necessary but it can also be used to cross-promote and bring people over to HG.

This might be off-topic but do Voobly's workshop also count?

For example this guy is using a lot of graphics from this website but his credits seem to be lacking.

http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/312/Forgotten-Empires-30/Overview/wall/post

Perhaps we can help him by telling him who to credit/ask permission from? I've already tried to do this to some aspect but I didn't manage to recall all the authors' names.

To me that's the problem with the compilation mods, people will tend to forget where the gfx originated from!

This guys is still one of the biggest offenders IMHO.

I indeed recognize all of those unit graphics from AoKH. What an arse.

I just reported them all saying as much.

@Jan: I think it's an original scenario, it was designed in AoF (for which there haven't been any Constantinople siege scenarios designed yet iirc)? It certainly looks similar to a couple of scenarios that I've played on here, but then again it's a popular topic and due to the detailed plans of the medieval city that still exist it is easy to make a very accurate depiction.

Will do some further digging nonetheless.

Haha I know the feeling and your fears are totally justified, considering the amount of content from here that gets ripped off and reuploaded on the Steam Workshop.

Every once in a while I browse the workshop to check for this stuff and each time I find at least 20 things to report. I guess the work here at AoKH is just that popular

Found another jackpot of stolen submissions. Link.

The Greece map was originally uploaded here by Jan dc, who has confirmed to me that the uploader did this without permission. I'm also fairly sure I recognize most of the other maps in that post from submissions here or on Moddb (or even the Steam Workshop itself. If any of the actual original authors of those maps see this, please post to let me know.

Yeah :/ I swung the banhammer on him but I can't do anything about the maps, though I reported them all, as well as made comments on each of them (which I guess he can delete since it's his workshop). Best course of action is to fill out the DMCA form that Steam gives you- my guess is the Valve staff don't really care about the "lower level" reports but will jump to attention when they see a copyright infringement form pop up as that's legal stuff.

If he continues being belligerent I can extend his forum ban indefinitely.

I know we shouldn't have to do it, but maybe we should copyright our maps here on AoKH. Like add a trigger that tells the players playing the map who actually made it. (or that the map wasn't uploaded to the steam workshop with consent of the original author) Or maybe add some invisible unit to the map with your name on it.

Also read about the comments of that jerk superman. What a major arse!

I'm not sure how I feel about that- having every AoKH map with a trigger as a "AoKH" copyright tag would make us look like some sort of corporation or something when we're more of a community. It's bad enough when other sites slap their name all over maps and various mods, it just gets tiring to see it as a player

I guess what I'm saying is that we shouldn't have to change our ways completely because one idiot is trying to steal our maps. Calling them out and pointing at the original file, or filling out the DMCA is enough in most cases. Obviously any designer can do whatever they like with their own map, but we shouldn't let guys like this influence us

I haven't ever actually uploaded anything to the Steam Workshop, but if I did, the extent of my AoKH promotion would be to link to the original upload here, and even to point them to the discussion thread if I had one. Just something to acknowledge the community here of course

but i hope they will it remove soon ! its a shame, and its sad to read in the comments how he gives the other people the feeling that he is the creator.

Europe, australia, africa, all those big landscapes are easy to make because it has water around countries but how i make carpathian basin with rivers when it has no water around countries? how i make lines? how i make boundaries?
Its like making full grass map with rivers but it´s difficulty to make like 100 rivers when map size is limited. And how i make boundaries? i don´t even know where in there is jungle, forest or rivers.
