Gwyndlegard

By Lord Basse

If you have not heard of the name Lord Basse before, chances are that this is the first time you are viewing this web site, in which case, I welcome you. This week, for the Blacksmith Feature, I delve into one of Lord Basse’s campaigns that was released a few days ago – Gwyndlegard! While keeping with his tradition of bizarre names, much of Lord Basse’s works also include an intriguing blend of Swedish culture, humor, and a focus on gameplay, and Gwyndlegard is by means no exception, though this time, the game is on a much larger scale. This epic begins with the country of Gwyndlegard, a once prominent land and brilliant economy, sullen by the envy of the Xiochan neighbors. You take control of Immanuel and his accomplices from the southern Gwynhill province, faced with the challenge of liberating the population from slavery and saving your wife-to-be.

The game itself could probably be best summarized as a mixed bag of stuff, with the beginning mainly being fixed force and later turning into a brilliant build and destroy, with a few stealth and RPG elements placed throughout the game, a bit reminiscent of Sabato Returns at times. Lord Basse has also included his own AI files, which make the game feel lifelike and challenging, not to mention the music and sound effects that add to the epic atmosphere. While no new map tricks are present, Gwyndlegard looks stunning. Each region has a distinct feeling, from the mixed forests in Gwynhill, to the verdant fields in the countryside. In fact, you may have a hard time cutting down the trees in the game; I know I did.

Gwyndlegard is an excellent campaign with a good balance of classic and contemporary influences. Being a new release, there are bound to be a plethora of bugs, but that shouldn’t stop one from giving Gwyndlegard a try. Go on, download it now if you haven’t already!
