Salt Marsh Tournament Winner
Posted by Aro on April 21st, 2004 @ 3:40 a.m.
I know what you're probably thinking if you haven't checked out the General & Strategy Discussion forum. "What's the Salt Marsh Tournament? When did that start?" Truth is, Novelist started it around a month ago and kept it in the quiet so no experts slipped in to steal the win and the prize. The Tournament was based on the Salt Marsh map, which is strategic in it's own way. Quoted from Novelist...
Recently I've come to appreciate the Salt Marsh map. On this map it seems twice as important as usual to control the center. It blurs the line between "land map" and "water map". Strategies are different from the Flush and GRush that dominate so many other maps.
The victor of this tournament is Evil Viking and his favorite beverage, "beer". (It was also the battle of the drinks, which beer won thanks to EV.) Congrats to Evil Viking, and I'm looking forward to seeing other tournaments held at AoKH in the future.

Two New SD Articles
Posted by Aro on April 13th, 2004 @ 11:09 p.m.
The University has recieved two new design articles, both from the same author - watchwood. The first one is called The Beginner's Guide to Scenario Design, and the second is called Level Dynamics.

The Beginner's Guide to Scenario Design is a guidelines-type article for all of you new designers out there. It explains many common mistakes that are involved when designing a scenario, and also explains a bit about how to score high in the reviewing categories.

The second article, Level Dynamics, is about how you can incorperate a "Difficulty Level" system into your scenario to make it playable for all players. If they want to play an easier scenario, they can set it to the Easy difficulty setting and play the scenario with just enough ease so they can beat it. If they want harder, they can just set it to the "Hard Difficulty" setting.

Both are a good read, so make sure to check them out. You can feel free to submit your own articles to the University by e-mailing them in a .txt attachment to Angel Aro (in a ZIP folder if it includes any images, rec. games, etc). Watch this space - more articles are under way. ;-)

University Article - Game-Crash Troubleshooting
Posted by Aro on April 10th, 2004 @ 5:19 a.m.
Submitted today by Lord_Fadawah, this useful and informative article will save you a lot of chaos when it comes to the game crashing when in the Editor. There are many causes to why this can happen, and Fadawah has listed pretty much all of them and ways to fix the specific crash. Here's a quote from the article that explains it better than I have...
All designers, no matter what their skill level or graphics card, will invariably come across crashes at some point or other. Like death and taxes, they are a part of life. I have been waging a perpetual war against them these last few years, and I believe that I understand everything about them.

Ever been in the middle of some kick-@$$ campaign that is going knock flat everyone who plays it, and then at a certain point the THE GAME STARTS CRASHING?! It's not AoK's fault, and it's not your computer's fault. Most likely, it is your fault. I'm not flaming you, just saying that generally it is sloppy triggerwork that causes crashes.
Want to read more? Feel free to take a look at the article here. Go ahead and submit your own design articles in .txt attachments to Angel Aro.

Legion Site Re-Design
Posted by Aro on April 6th, 2004 @ 1:20 a.m.
The Legion Clan website has had a huge re-design that looks excellent. Among these new site changes, they have a world time bar which will show you what time it is in the many time zones, loads faster (for us poor 56k'ers ;-)), and has more organized pages. Feel free to check it out!
The University Design Section
Posted by Aro on April 1st, 2004 @ 4:53 a.m.
The University's Design section is now up, with three starter article to get it going. Every time the University gets new Strategy/Design articles, I'll be sure to announce it on the news to keep everybody included on what's getting pasted up.

The first is the Scenario Editor Trigger Tutorial created by myself, which explains each condition and effect to you. The second is a detailed article about the Display Instructions effect (also created by myself), which shows you many more things you can do with it than just put text on the screen.

Last but not least is Shadowflare's ModPack 101 tutorial for the Modding category. This article details many aspects of using ModPack Studio, and many other need-to-knows about ModPack creation. Here's a quote from the article...
For review, a modpack is a collection of graphics and/or text that changes the game. With a modpack, you can modify existing buildings and units, change text and labels, rename units, and even modify map and AI scripts and settings. The number one and best way of doing these things is with a program called ModPack Studio(MPS), which is a free download here are AoKH. The current version that won't destroy your computer is MPS 2.0.
...
To submit your own articles to the University, e-mail them in the NotePad .TXT files (or all in a .ZIP file if it includes pictures) to Angel Aro.
