Long ago the town of Great Hill was a well respected English village, peaceful and un-touched by war. Until one day they elected an idiot as mayor. This mayor decided that because he had seen some French people in his town, he would declare it part of France. Great Hill was in the middle of England. England and France were at war. The French had no intention of helping them...
For how long can you fend off the English, in this Defend the Spot styled scenario?

Heh, quite a fun story. I killed over 30 blokes when a mangonel started attacking me from behind. I quickly went to garrison my men in the castle when it crashed. Not sure what happened here... In any case, the map design is nothing to care for, you could probably put in a bit more effort here. |

Yes. The map design isn't fabulous but I didn't really think too much in that category. I wanted this to be like a short mini-game scenario. The best I've managed myself is 114 kills.
About the crash, I had the same problem but the update (a day after release) fixes that little bug. |

England, France, and Great Hill is a defend-the-spot style scenario that packs quite a punch in terms of playability and fun, but is lacking in other areas.
Playability: 4+
This scenario is fun. A typical DtS, most of its amusement is derived from the intensity that comes as more and more enemies build up around your castle. There are no bugs or glitches that I could find, and map design helps add a little to the score. Unfortunately, I cannot give it a 5 because of the lack of creativity. There's nothing here that makes it any better than any other DtS I've played, so I rate it at 4+.
Balance: 5
I played on Moderate, and the balance on this scenario was perfect. The number of enemy units increased at a steady pace, and players of any skill level will be able to just pick it up and play, due to the very nature of the scenario. A 5.
Creativity: 2+
Unfortunately, this scenario was not all that creative. The story was the most creative aspect, but it did not really exist within the scenario. The designer did allow you to recieve units at certain kill levels, but only two (a missionary at 30, and a galleon at 50). Making this a consistant feature would have merited a higher score, but at the moment, it just sort of feels like a gimmick. Also, music would have helped. A 2+.
Map Design: 3
While the map was not very pretty and contained no eye candy, it was better than a random map and functioned well. The two paths around the castle as well as the gate at the back allowed for some strategy, as well as the water around the castle. This merits a 3.
Story/Instructions: 2+
Only the bare bones of a story was present, the humorous story given in the history section. Within the scenario itself, the story is not mentioned at all, and it sort of feels like it was tacked on afterward. A little introductory cutscene or something would have been nice, something that sets you up for the scenario. The instructions and hints also were not really up to par. The instructions just told you to get as many kills as possible and when you would recieve new units. The hints were a little bit more helpful, but not much. There was also no introductory bitmap, but those aren't necessary. A 2+.
Additional Comments:
This is a fun scenario, and a recommended download, especially if you're a fan of defend-the-spot style scenarios. An interesting point that did not affect the score is that, despite the name, there is no hill in the scenario.
My record is 118, by the way. |
