The Seas of Egressa RP is the much-lauded 2010 Multiplayer Scenario of the Year, recently rebalanced and updated by the authors with some input from yours truly. I feel that especially after the update, the current rating of a 4.2 is inaccurate and the file deserved another look.
Playability: 4+
With a choice of five very different factions and endless options in terms of alliances and diplomacy, the replayability factor here is quite strong. The scenario is geared towards making agreements with your neighbors, claiming land, establishing colonies, and building a great sea empire. However, one thing I felt could be improved is the fact that the high-density map design makes for very little building space, making it difficult to boom up quickly, as you are often dependent on deforesting a region before placing buildings you need. Building extra Town Centers is especially difficult due to lack of space and the fact that a TC needs a flat 4x4 area to be built on.
Balance: 5
The recent update (today) to the map has successfully addressed several of the balance issues that I mentioned in the previous version of the review. Small buffs to the Mayan and Korean players rectified the issue of late-game naval inferiority to the Goth and Spanish players, and slight nerfs to the start of the Goth player considerably help the balance of the early game. All told, I feel that the map is much more fair and that matchups between any even combination of players should be more balanced now, as opposed to the situation in previous versions.
Creativity: 5
Between the premise, design, and gameplay, I felt Egressa to be a very inspired and creative work by two rather accomplished designers. The idea of a pirate faction that can be bought and bribed by the players is quite novel, and the backstory is an excellent, creative read that is certainly recommended.
Map Design: 5-
I was thoroughly impressed by the ability of the authors to create a diverse and interesting archipelago incorporating several different climates. Each player's base was generally quite nice, although I still feel that the Spanish and Mayan player's bases could go for a little retouching. Keeping such a large amount of water interesting is a difficult task but was pulled off remarkably well. Aesthetically illogical issues in some spots still persist (referring mostly to building doorways opening out off the face of cliffs, but this is not enough to drag the score down from a 5.
Story/Instructions: 5
By far one of the best parts of the scenario, the backstory is a pleasure to read. One issue is that some of the backstory is only available in the History section and can thus only be viewed through the editor (as it's a .scx), but this is relatively minor. I disagree with the previous review that gave this category a 4, as it certainly deserves a 5 for its high echelon of quality.
Additional Comments:
A remastered classic that is definitely worth another look. Go ahead and download it![Edited on 08/01/15 @ 10:05 PM]
