DirectDrawFix 20130101-154045
Introduction
Windows Vista and Windows 7 break color compatibility with certain applications that depend upon palette-based, 256-color graphics. Due to changes to DirectX and DirectDraw, the colors of these applications and games may appear distorted under these newer operating systems. This issue applies to both The Age of Kings and The Conquerors Expansion.
DirectDrawFix will allow you to resolve this specific issue by applying required compatibility fixes to the registry. Elevation is required for this application to perform its updates. Windows XP and earlier operating systems are already compatible and do not require this update.

Hi! Yeah, this is the best palette fix. I did one for myself too, and I'm glad to see that other people know about it too.
It's also good that it isn't only attached to one executable, it automates the job of searching the ID and editing the registry for you just in one click! Awesome.
By the way, a DWORD can be used for the ID field too. :) the binary isn't obligated.[Edited on 02/17/12 @ 01:18 PM]

You're right that REG_DWORD can be used, however all existing entries use REG_BINARY, so, for consistency, I opted for that. Thanks! |

Usefulness/Novelty: 5
Can't believe I was using the Kill Explorer fix for so long. This works perfectly.
Quality/Instructions: 5
Simple, no bad stuff(virus/trojan/malware), so perfect that I think Microsoft should have had this fix when Vista was released.

DirectDrawFix is a tool that can be used to fix the Windows Vista/Windows 7 colour problem. Many of us have faced this problem due to new operating systems incompatibility with Age of Empire's 256-colour palette.
Usefulness/Novelty: 5
There have been a number of different colour fixes in the past, my personal favourite was to use Lord Basse's colour fix. But unfortunately the problem with that fix was that you have to close down Windows Explorer to be able to fix the problem. DirectDraw however, allows us to open up our original Age of Empires exe file without the use of any bat file. It allows us to open up the game normally without having to close Windows Explorer. This means you can still use the rest of your computer without having the exit the game every time, which for me personally became really annoying.
Quality/Instructions: 5
In terms of quality this utility is perfect. Every colour issue thrown at it is resolved perfectly. Kit is simple and effective and only requires a few clicks of the mouse. Simply select the exe you wish to fix and away you go. Instructions given are perfect and tell you exactly what to do.
Additional Comments:
Overall one of the most useful utilities to date, perfect for Vista/7 users. A perfect fix given and very simple to use. No need to kill explorer again. Highly recommend to any Vista/7 users.
Thanks for the great fix!

I still see the colour issues in the fog of war if the resolution is the middle one or higher :( |
