Current Version (date-time)
DirectDrawFix 20130101-154045
Introduction
Windows Vista and Windows 7 break color compatibility with certain applications that depend upon palette-based, 256-color graphics. Due to changes to DirectX and DirectDraw, the colors of these applications and games may appear distorted under these newer operating systems. This issue applies to both The Age of Kings and The Conquerors Expansion.
DirectDrawFix will allow you to resolve this specific issue by applying required compatibility fixes to the registry. Elevation is required for this application to perform its updates. Windows XP and earlier operating systems are already compatible and do not require this update.
System Requirements
Windows Vista or later operating system

That's a separate issue, which is sometimes caused by your monitor/screen performing some kind of widescreen scaling/stretching. Please try to adjust the settings on your monitor. I hope you are able to resolve the issue.[Edited on 07/09/12 @ 10:02 AM]

I'm really sorry to bother everyone with this, I know I shouldn't but I can't find the answer anywhere: Where do I extract this file to once I download it? Sorry for being a noob. |

I don't think it makes any difference where you extract it, you only need to run it once. |

Yes, the process is:
1. extract the archive anywhere
2. run the app
3. fix age2_x1.exe (or empires2.exe, etc.)
4. close the app
5. delete the app and the archive
That's it :) |

Oh gosh, I have screwed up my AoFE, I guess...
I run this fix but took the file "age2_x2" (I will remember), instead of "age2_x1" and now I can't start AoFE... I just get a black window (which will turn grey if I click on it), where the window were I could chose "Play" where. I don't know how to fix this. I have uninstalled everything and deleted the remaining files and even the AoE II folder and installed everything again but when I try to run the launcher for AoFE I get the same black window... Does anybody have any solution to this ?
I've got Windows 7, 64-bit. By the way, my original AoK doesn't work and didn't even before this fix but AoFE did. (AoK goes to starting a Random map but then it crashes.) (Now I wanted to try on this computer. Otherwise I use to play on a computer with XP and that works fine, even with AoFE.)[Edited on 02/03/13 @ 05:51 PM]

English is not my first language so I guess it could be difficult to understand some technical stuff in a chat, right away. I will try at any AoFE thread instead. But thanks for the advice ! |

I see all these peeps using this and saying its great...but I cant get it to work, keeps saying "the selected file is invalid". When I type the path this is what I typed in the empty field for path etc....C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\age2_.exe. ....obviously i don't know much about computers, and if some one could just write it out for me to type in. exactly the way it needs to be, that would be a big help. you know a lot of us gamers don't know much about computers them selves, and a simple step by step is about the only way we can do this stuff. I just need to know where or how to type the right stuff in..i think. ty, any help would be appreciated. I run win7 64 home premium, and I miss not being able to play 1 of my all time fav games. ty for reading this. |

It might be easier to use the Browse button to find your exe instead of manually typing it.
For normal installs, these are the exes inside your Microsoft Games folder:
- Conquerors Expansion: Age of Empires II\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe
- Age of Kings: Age of Empires II\empires2.exe[Edited on 08/15/13 @ 03:23 AM]
