If this is just the demo, then I can't wait until the full campaign is released. The guys at Starcraft/AoK Punk have come up with the first masterpiece for AoK with "The Rage of the Dutch Fisherman", which is clearly the best AoK scenario released thus far. In the short while that AoK has been out, a clear work of art has already risen.
As you play this scenario, the first thing you will notice is the incredible Map Design, which almost equals anything I have ever seen done for AoE. With realistic, beautiful, and stunning terrain, this level would still be fun to play if there was only a map to explore! Add together all the other great parts of this scenario, and you have a great one.
Triggers are used masterfully to simulate events that most people would never even think of, and are put together very nicely in an unlinier plot that will keep you playing for as long as it takes to win.
As I already said, this scenario is very fun to play, and is extremely well-balanced. You will find yourself challenged, without being overwhelmed by impossible odds. The score may seem a little low for a masterpiece, but there are a few things that keep this great scenario from getting a higher rating: First of all is the fact that this scenario is only a demo: Only about half of the Gigantic Map is used for actual gameplay, although the other half can be explored. (Of interest may be the incredible lake in the Southern part of the Map). Another thing that keeps this scenario from getting a higher score is the fact that in the demo you cannot buy of trade for food. Thus, you only have about 25 minutes of playing time before you die. Now, we come to the only major flaw in an otherwise great scenario: The Story/Instructions. They are only a couple of lines long, and there is no bitmap. Fortunately, the authors have promised to fix this for the final version. Despite these few flaws, "The Rage of the Dutch Fisherman (Demo)" is clearly the best of the early Age of Kings scenarios, and if the full campaign lives up to it's potential, it should be in the 4.6 - 4.8 range, which is an incredible feat, considering that Age of Kings has only been released for a short time. It seems as if the guys at AoK Punk are setting the pace for great AoK scenarios. |
