Kings of West Africa is a nine scenario campaign designed by Al_Kharn the Great, a member of Forgotten Empires; the team behind the HD edition and its official expansion. The campaign is composed of nine stand-alone scenarios which tell the history of West Africa and some of its most famous kings and military leaders. The campaign was originally intended as an official campaign for the African Kingdoms expansion but was left on the cutting room floor. The author has now remastered the campaign for the Definitive Edition.
Playability: 5
This highly original campaign was an absolute blast to play! I had a great time playing through all nine scenarios. Being a series of stand-alone scenarios one needed worry about taking their time to complete this campaign as nine scenarios can be quite a daunting task for some, but if you're up for the challenge of tackling it all in one go, their also not too long so its a realistic challenge. Each scenario in this campaign is highly unique with some very original gameplay styles and objectives. While every scenario takes on the style of your typical build & destroy scenario that one would commonly find in the official campaigns, this campaign has some many unique elements in it that it sets itself apart from any other campaign I've played. This is a campaign that any player would enjoy no matter what their preferred style is.
Balance: 4
The scenario tackles many different historical battles and displays them in some very unique ways with a mixture of different objectives and styles. For example there are defend the spot style scenarios, build and conqueror scenarios, destroy the wonder scenarios, and more. The scenarios have the areas of challenge, especially the defend the spot style scenarios but ultimately most feel pretty easy for the most part. Not once in any scenario did I feel a threat of losing, but I did feel pressure at certain moments. I think the third scenario where you only start off with two monks and must convert soldiers was creative but got frustrating initially as you had to be careful where you disembarked your transport so you were not outnumbered by enemy units. The scenario where I had to collect the three relics was a breeze as I managed to find all the relics before the other teams even did anything. Overall I found the balance to be OK but many more experienced players would find this all too easy.
Creativity: 5
Each of the scenarios in this campaign showcase some tremendous talent and creativity. Every scenario is original is its gameplay and style and not one is the same as another. You have a variety of styles on display from a defend-the-spot to a destroy the wonder to a relic race. I loved all of the unique little ideas for each scenario and the creative objectives the player has to achieve such as converting as many people to your religion as possible or evacuating all of the villagers from the town.
Map Design: 4
The campaign showcase the varied landscape of Western Africa, from the dusty deserts in the north to the lush coastal havens to the west. There is some impressive design going on here, especially in the more vegetive and greener coastal scenarios. There are great placement of terrains and eye-candy and as always with this author, the settlements and cities and layout beautifully. My favourite design can be seen the the river raid scenario where you have to destroy the blue cities wonder and weaken it by attacking the farms on the outskirts. Designing desert scenarios are always difficult as it is hard to make them not look bland. Whilst I believe the author has done a great job designing these scenarios with plenty of eye candy to bee seen, there are often spaces that are a bit too bland for my liking still.
Story/Instructions: 5
This campaign features nine-stand alone scenarios detailing the history of West Africa over the span of almost five hundred years. These scenarios have been sown together with a magnificent framing device of a narrator detailing the vast history of these kings and military leaders to the player as one single story. Each opening and closing text is well written and clearly outlines the story and sets up each scenario well. The instructions in each scenario a clearly described and many helpful hints are given as well so players should never be stuck for what to do.
Additional Comments:
Overall this is a fantastic campaign of nine stand-alone scenarios. Its a shame these were left out of the original expansion but we are fortunate enough that Al_Kharn has offered them to us anyway. A Highly recommended download.
Thanks
