Terrain blending (a.k.a. 'layered terrain') is a new feature in AoE2: DE that lets you combine two different types of terrain in the same map squares. This greatly increases the variety of terrains that are possible for you to feature in your maps! See the below image for a demonstration of how this works.
This map is meant to be a 'visual dictionary' for you to browse terrain combinations by seeing them fully rendered instead of scrolling through lists in the map editor. Some combinations are counterintuitive but look great. It's fun to look around at everything even if you're not making a mod!
Each terrain block has a sign that gives info on the terrain when you click on it.
The Objectives tabs in-game give a full list of which terrains are used and which are excluded due to being graphically redundant.
There are units along the southwest edge of the map that change the map's color mood when you click on them.
There is also an elephant unit in the west corner that moves your screen to the opposite terrain block of the last sign you selected. For example, if you select the sign for the terrain block Grass layered over Ice, then select the elephant unit, the screen will move to the terrain block Ice layered over Grass.
How Terrain Blending Works:
Snowy Underbrush layered over 2D Shoreless Water
Ice layered over Azure Shallows
Jungle Underbrush layered over Foundation Grass
Ice layered over Black
Jungle Grass layered over Swamp Shallows
Note: This map takes longer to load than most other maps.
Shoutout to the developers of AoE2 Scenario Parser, which is what I used to make all of the terrain blocks and most of the triggers for this mod: https://ksneijders.github.io/AoE2ScenarioParser/
Scenario Parser is an excellent Python tool that I highly recommend to anyone making mods for AoE2.
Thanks everyone! Please let me know what you think!
This utility by CADi_Master demonstrates the various abilities of one of the new tools to come from the Definitive Edition's scenario editor: The Terrain Layer Blending Tool.
The terrain blending tool is a unique addition the the DE editor which allows designers to places multiple terrains on top of each other and blend them together to create some unique looking terrains and therefore some very original map designs. This utility acts as a visual dictionary to showcase all 6400 combinations that are possible with this tool. CADi_Master has gone to great effort to put this map together and allow designers to see every single possible combination of terrains that can be blended together. There are so many unique and useful different combinations here to see and this acts as a great way to save designers who are new to this editor and tool to see the results of it without spending hours experimenting themselves.
The map is perfectly laid out in a very neat and organised way. Every different combination is laid out in an organised grid system, each grid piece being a decent size to see the effect clearly whilst also allow for a decent area to allow for designers to map copy the effect into their own scenarios. There is also a sign on each grid piece to explain what the combination is (ice over water, grass over desert, rock over ice, etc). This is also really helpful to understand the technique. Installation is really simple, either place the scenario into the scenario folder or subscribe the mod in in-game the Mod Workshop.
Overall I believe this to be one of the most useful utility for the Definitive Edition and a highly recommended download.
