I have never seen the movie "The Seven Samurai", although I can honestly say that playing this scenario made me want to go out and watch it. That is how well done it was. Combining quest, puzzle and battle elements, this scenario should be an instant classic, and is one of the best I have played yet for AoK. It is clear that a TON of work went into this scenario, and is shown by the huge amount of complex triggers, all which work perfectly and add greatly to the gameplay. As you journey through the scenario, you will find yourself recruiting allies, defending villages, making daring raids, and saving a poor farming village from 40 bandits, armed with only seven samurai and a handful of farmers. Simply put, you will not want to miss this scenario. The map design is nice, although it may be a little sparse in areas. The Story/Instructions are well-done, with a nice bitmap. However, where this scenario really shines is in the playability department. All the time you spend playing this scenario will be time well-spent, you can count on it. Right from the opening "movie" to the thrilling conclusion, this scenario delivers a great gaming experience. I can't even begin to describe all the neat things that are accomplished through an incredible amount of triggers. The only fault that I could find was that I could not figure out how to win the final battle. It could just be me, but it did seem too difficult. Other than that, this is a great scenario. By the way, don't expect any more reviews from me for a little while, because I'll be renting "The Seven Samurai" from my nearest Blockbuster :-) |

“Seven Samurai v1.1” is a campaign based around the famous Seven Samurai movie by Akira Kurosawa. Seven Samurai’s movie tells no only of the different social classes of Japanese society during this period but also of man’s relationship which each other.
Playability: - The playability of Seven Samurai v1.1 is highly enjoyable, not quite addictive but very close. After leaving your town to hire samurai seems an impossible task, due to your low social status. One particular scene grabbed me, where a thief is holding a child hostage and dressing up as a monk you trick the thief into coming out for food. The food triggers are well balanced for a tough survival, defending the town is very hard, if not impossible if the Bandit Scouts escape. Due to the overall toughness and fair distancing walking between town and town I’ve marked this as one grade lower than the highest.
Balance: - Balance wise, this scenario is fairly tough, fighting 40 Bandits with 7 samurai is never going to be an easy task. Since this is the final task it is supposed to be hard, however it as mentioned in the playability is almost impossible if the Bandit Scouts survive to inform the other Bandits. Overall, there is a tough but winnable scenario underneath for those who are prepared to put enough effort and time into completing Gregory Koteles scenario. Again, I have opted for a grade below full marks.
Creativity: - There are many different creative aspects to this version of Seven Samurai, as well as retelling the story in depth the author has further added more in the way of a destroyed town and dying survivors to portray the bandits of Japanese society during this time period. The scene as to having to dress as a Monk to disguise your true intent as a Samurai to lure the thief out was particularly creative and was a brilliant spark of imagination mixed with portrayal of Seven Samurai’s story at the same time. In summary, the creativity factor of Seven Samurai is particularly strong and thus has earned the highest score possible in this category.
Map Design: - The features and map design of Seven Samurai is well made, bearing in mind this is a fairly old scenario the map-design work is great. With waterfalls, hills, towns, mountains, burning villages, Bandit hideouts and an excellent use of gaia I feel obliged to score the maximum here.
Story/Instructions: - This section is where Seven Samurai truly excels. With a descriptive History section, detailed hints and a great bitmap help build the story and narrative. There are detailed instructions mixed with some excellent pieces of gameplay to make the story more believable. The town elects four farmers, Yohei, Manzo, Rikichi and Mosuke to go and recruit samurai to defend the town. Gisaku, the old town elder is also well displayed, during conversations. I find the way some samurai change their opinions as more and more samurai are recruited is well thought of, and show through holes in the supposed Samurai etiquette. Humour is mixed in well with the final 7th samurai being but a mere 13 years old. Mixed with superior samurai, a lumberjack and other warriors help you build up feelings for many of the samurai who are fighting for the village as noble warriors. Interaction in game is definitely what Seven Samurai was based around with the “click-talk” trick used to great effect, with descriptive and punctual conversations. |
