The Conquerors 1.0c |
Some water, some forest, some trees, some shallow, some strange objects. Map looks strange. Really fun to play! |

I downloaded Strange World because it seemed interesting, and the author said it'd be fun to play. It is definitely an interesting map, but there are some serious problems with it.
Theme: 5 The theme seems to be a tropical island with strange objects all over it. It is well-executed, because the map sure looks like that and there are strange objects at every turn. While the author doesn't purposely use randomness, maps can be very different, again a plus. Everything also fits together quite nicely, and the idea is unique.
Visual Appeal: 5 I'm truly amazed! This map looks wonderful, both on the screen and on the minimap. Lush mixed forests, nice water mixing, plants arranged in geometric patterns to look like gardens, blocks of ice floating on the water, wierd purplish objects that somehow fit in too - a great job here. This is one of the best eyecandy maps I've seen.
Playability: 1 Unfortunately, the map falls really short here. There is way too little space, and too many trees (few paths between players). Worst of all, however, resources are sometimes not placed. Because of lack of space you're lucky if you end up with one gold or stone pile; sometimes there's none near your base. Also, sometimes, resources are partly inside forests, making them hard to get to. A lot more thought could've gone here to make the map able to support a game. It seems like there was no attempt to fix this, and a game without gold/stone piles and places to build is no fun, especially if your enemies are lucky to have some gold but you aren't. I might've given this a 2 since some resources exist, but the imbalance between player starting positions brought this down.
Overall: 3.6 Strange World seems to be a map of extremes. It has a good theme and great terrain/eyecandy placement, but the lack of space makes it unplayable. If the author added more space so resources would be fairly placed (and not to mention so you would be able to build a base), and playtested the map more, this would've been a classic. As it stands now, however, it needs more work. There is a lot of potential here - with a bit more playtesting, this could be one great map. |
