This campaign is based on one hero, Joseph IV, a kind man that won the support of the public, but faced many a battle against his enemies.
PLAYABILITY: There’s not a whole lot of trigger manipulation of civs in the scenario’s making up this campaign, so it will have a similar playability as a random game. There is a story, and instruction provided at the beginning of each one, and a few times you will receive a short dialogue, but nothing that adds to the game play. I often play random games, and enjoyed this one equally well.
BALANCE: Depending on your level of experience with this game (AOK), the balance should fall between easy to moderate. Most of the games have at least two enemies, one being stronger and seemingly richer in resources. You start your games with established, towns, making it easier to build a proper defense.
CREATIVITY: Although the story line is short for each scenario, they follow through on the overall story right to its completion, with an additional insert after every victory. One of the scenarios has an unusual beginning, where you have to accumulate gold to research spying, all the while, the amount keeps increasing at the castle, and on top of that you have to pay 200 gold to an army (that comes by every so often), so that they won’t destroy you.
MAP DESIGN: The maps all had nice playability and a realistic look to them. I was a little skeptical with the desert map, as I first found it lacking more growth , , but realized that’s probably the way the author wanted it to look , most deserts have very little growing in them in real life. There
is a flaw that may or may not be encountered. In the scenario where you have to mine a lot of gold , there is a castle that is built too close to a civ you are suppose to fight against a little latter on. If a patrolling trebuchet from that civ happens to make it to a certain spot , it will find itself in range, and destroy the castle causing you to loose the game.
STORY / INSTRUCTION: The campaign followed through on a story about a hero and his success. The instructions were provided that allowed you to accomplish your objectives, but could have offered a bit more detail. At one scenario I had destroyed an enemy, and latter fired a trigger that launched a dialogue suggesting we do something to scare that civ into joining our side. There were lots of hints provided, as well as scout reports.
