It's a new year! In a little over nine months, the game that is the titular "topic" in this off-topic forum will turn 21 years old and with the Definitive Edition newly released, it doesn't look like it is anywhere close to its grave yet. People are still playing it, and people are still making scenarios in it - and telling stories in it.
For me personally, telling stories through scenarios has always been my favourite part of the game. It was the main reason I stuck around this forum back in the days, and it is the primary reason I am still here; because, ultimately, this is a community of creators. Modders, map makers - and writers, in one form or another.
Since 2008 we have occasionally hosted writing competitons for those of us who enjoy storytelling even outside the realm of AoE2. We have written all kinds of stories: historical fiction and fantasy, horror and sci-fi, and stories that do not fit neatly into any genre. And now it is time to do this once more!
THE RULES:
What am I writing?
Any work of fiction, like a short story or poetry.
How long do I have?
Just about two months. Your entry must be submitted before February 29th.
To whom do I send my entry?
To matt.livecchi@gmail.com. Your story should preferably be in .pdf format, but .doc, .docx, or .odt are also allowed.
Anything else?
Why, yes, I am glad you asked!
Your entry must not exceed 6,000 words. If you find yourself just above the limit, there is always a word or two you can trim. Keep in mind that longer =/= better; a single page of high quality will always receive a higher score than a detailed but boring or poorly written story.Your entry must be a work of fiction. Any type of prose, poetry or even screenplay is allowed, but not essays or articles. The entry that you submit must be your own original work, with no input from anybody else (so no team entries). You can use pre-existing fictitious worlds and canon in your piece, as long as you construct an original story. For example you may set your entry within the realm of Middle Earth, just don't go copying and pasting the plot of Lord of The Rings.Once you have sent your entry, you will have no chance to edit it further – it is considered final. Make sure you're happy with it before you send it in.You do not need to officially sign up to enter, as long as you have an HG account and make sure you send your story in before the deadline!
THE JUDGING
The judges this time around are Major Helper, Mr. Wednesday and Neochud!
The three judges will read your entry and give it a maximum of 50 points, which will be split equally between to categories: Technical Proficiency and Literary Content.
For "Technical Proficiency" the main areas that will be judged will be how well your entry is structured, the literary technique displayed, the use of language for effect, charaterization, thematic development and others. You will be marked down for spelling and grammatical errors (unless of course it is used as colloquialism during dialogue), so be sure to check your entries thoroughly for any errors.
"Literary Content" will be the content of the entry itself, and to be blunt - did the judges like it? Was your entry satisfying, was the plot developed, or was the dialogue wooden with the characters lifeless? It may be good writing a well thought out and technical piece of prose, but if it isn't interesting to the judges you are shooting yourself in the foot.
The judges should read and rate the entries expeditiously, so that we can get a result as soon as is reasonably possible. They should provide a few lines for each of the category (or more) as motivation for their scoring.

Now that you know what to do and what to expect, it's time to let the creative juices flow! Good luck and have fun writing!
