Hello all, and welcome to AoKH's Fantasy Scenario Contest! The theme of this contest is Fantasy (shocking!), but that might take in more than you expect. Historical fiction with a slice fantastical, mythologies, legends, low fantasy, high fantasy, book adaptations, original stories, all are fair game! If you are interested and considering entering, please be sure to read all of the rules below before committing your name in a reply.

Submit all entries to the Single Player Scenarios category in the Blacksmith, then post here to let us know the scenario is to be considered an entry. All entries must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST, November 30th. It must meet the requirements listed below to be eligible for judging. Otherwise, you will face disqualification. As an added note, we will be approving the files in the Blacksmith as they appear, so don't worry about the long deadline. Our goal is to run the contests this year simultaneously with long deadlines, hopefully encouraging people to enter whatever they feel like and plan their designing hours accordingly.

In addition, please keep in mind that this contest is a newer addition to AoKH's lineup, and as such we encourage you to voice any concerns you have with the rules or format.

Rules
1. Cut-scenes are allowed, but must be contained within the scenario. Scenarios must include at least some playable portions.
2. One entry per person or per team only. Yes, team designs are allowed
3. The use of Userpatch and AOK:HD are allowed.
4. The Use of The Forgotten Expansion, African Kingdoms, and Rise of the Rajas is permitted.
5. Graphical or data mods are allowed. If your scenario uses an original modification, include it in the download file. If your scenario uses an existing mod (eg. Age of Chivalry or Tales of Middle Earth, please include a link in the file description to the download).
6. There is no trigger limit. However, the use of extra triggers will not necessarily warrant a higher score.
7. The use of custom soundtracks and sound effects is permitted and encouraged. If using custom sound files, please specify somewhere on which speed the scenario is to be played, as otherwise the soundtracks might overlap if the scenario is played on a speed other than what the designer intended, which will cause points to be deducted.
9. Please submit your scenario in campaign (.cpx) format.

Fantasy Theme
As noted, the scenario must be considered to contain some fantasy element. If you are having trouble deciding if your scenario qualifies, consider the following examples:

Scenarios that would be allowed:
1. A LOTR or Game of Thrones adaptation
2. A scenario based around Norse, Egyption, Chinese, Aztec, or Greek Mythology (among others)
3. A Robin Hood or King Arthur scenario
4. Ulio or The Kings Best Men (or I should say something like these, please no plagiarism)
5. Historical Fantasy, such as a Merlin based England scenario

Scenarios that wouldn't really qualify:
1. A highly historical version of Badon Hill
2. Religious scenarios
3. Historical fiction with no real fantastical elements. A Trojan War scenario which features the Greek gods would be allowed, for example, while something like the movie 'Troy' is mostly just pseudo-historical fiction.

Judging
All entries will be judged based on categories slightly altered from the review guidelines, as follows:

Enjoyment (15) - Simply, how much fun is the scenario to play?
Balance (5) - When played on the suggested settings, is the scenario well balanced? If there is more than one difficulty setting, do the levels scale appropriately? An easy or terribly hard scenario may still score full marks, if the judge feels his enjoyment was not hindered by lack of challenge or multiple saves/reloads.
Creativity (5) - Covers the creative elements you incorporate into your map, story, gameplay, and design. Creativity should be judged roughly as it is scored in a blacksmith review.
Scenario Design (15) - Covers your map design skills, your soundtrack, your bitmap, your presentation, the flow, the polishing...simply put, it's the skill on display at making scenarios!
Story (10) - Similar to the blacksmith, but with particular focus on how the fantasy elements of the story were implemented, or how the original story was adapted, the legend was re-imagined, etc.

(total of 50 possible points)

Prizes
To be confirmed...

Judges
1. Popeychops
2. Kataphraktoi(?)

If I create a new Doom scenario will you accept it for the contest?

NOTE: This will be a more different DOOM scenario than my single player DOOM campaign project. It will be a special scenario for this contest. So will you agree my entry?

If you agree please sign me up.

If I create a new Doom scenario will you accept it for the contest?
I'm not sure DOOM (I'm presuming it's related to the video game series?) falls under fantasy. Unless you intend to have all the enemies you shoot be orcs and elves?

I think that Doom is a definitely fantasy scenario. Because a new race and a new planet is available in Doom universe. Doom has its own race "Demons". Doom has its own planet "Hell". Doom has its own universe. ( Hell - Mars - World - Martians - Union Aerospace Corporation etc... )

"Fantasy = The faculty or activity of imagining impossible or improbable things..."

You can check HERE to see that Doom has both science fiction and fantasy universe.

In addition original Doom monsters are available in Age of Empires 2 game engine with Vampire Revenge mod's new resources. I really want to join here with a Doom entry. I hope that a Doom entry is valid for this contest.

Lastly Doom has also its own movie. You can watch "Doom ( 2005 )" movie but the movie's story is not related with original Doom's story.

This was my idea so if it goes sour blame me lol. But we usually run contest sequentially, with short deadlines, and inevitably have to extend the deadlines. I thought it might be easier to post two contests for the rest of the year now, give people plenty of time to work and enter, and the freedom to enter both, or one. It's a different idea, we will see if it works.

I think the rationale for having deadlines of almost six months for both contests is to make it viable for people to enter both. We'll see how well it works.

@HELLKNIGHT, I always considered it primarily horror/scif-i, but I suppose you can make a case for it having some fantasy elements. Seeing as the contest is allowing for mythology and low fantasy stories like Ulio and TKBM, I guess the fantasy definition might be broad enough to include Doom as well.

If I don't finish an entry (which is quite likely, but you never know), I'll happily judge.

Doom should qualify. The enemies are typically undead or demons. It is more horror/fantasy than it is sci-fi.

    I would say allow it.

Here is what I think about the doom question mostly from a personal opinion stance rather than as a judge?.

The core fantasy concept invokes elves, dragons, orcs, gates opening up from the underworld and all manner of magical\mythical beasts. Im thinking lord of the rings or heroes of might and magic. These usually have a medieval or ancient antiquity flavour so doom doesnt strike me as fantasy. I was all fired up to make an argument smiting doom until I reread the rules and saw Ulio is allowed, which changes my thinking. Ulio is non historical, but the story is rather plausible and authentic. To my memory there was no overt magic and nothing in particular that could not happen in real life. Ulio is clearly not fantasy IMO, but doom does have fantasy elements such as demons and gates opening to hell etc etc. So my opinion is that Doom is more fantasy than Ulio is, so if Ulio is allowed then Doom must be allowed too, in order for the rules to have an internal logical consistency.

I think what you've described is more or less High fantasy, with elves and dragons and so forth.

Ulio is a fictional story set in an invented setting, which is basically a retelling of a story from greek mythology. It has very little in terms of 'magic', though there is prophecy and the scene with the monks attacking Ulio. I think it has enough elements to qualify.

In general, I would say there is a lot of overlap between Sci-Fi and fantasy. Star Wars for example, has a very sci-fi approach to most of its universe, but prophecies, the force, light and dark, are all really classic fantasy. All these types of stories fall under the broader umbrella of speculative fiction, but I would say whether a story is sci-fi or fantasy is decided by how it attempts to explain the inexplicable. If the main character can see the future because he has nanobots in his blood that predict all likely outcomes, probably science fiction. If he can see the future because he is the last in an ancient line of seers, probably fantasy.

Doom seems to be a bit of a mix, but probably falls under the broad umbrella set out.

I agree with Kataphraktoi. If Ulio qualifies (which I would personally describe as historical fiction rather than fantasy), Doom should qualify as well.

    posted 06-16-19 08:24 AM CT (US)     21 / 76
Ulio is definitely not historical fiction for the simple reason that none of the people, countries or events described therein are based on historical sources.

    Wikipedia explains it best:

Many fantasy authors use real-world folklore and mythology as inspiration; and although another defining characteristic of the fantasy genre is the inclusion of supernatural elements, such as magic, this does not have to be the case. For instance, a narrative that takes place in an imagined town in the northeastern United States could be considered realistic fiction as long as the plot and characters are consistent with the history of a region and the natural characteristics that someone who has been to the northeastern United States expects; however, if the narrative takes place in an imagined town, on an imagined continent, with an imagined history and an imagined ecosystem, the work becomes fantasy with or without supernatural elements.

DOOM would certainly qualify as fantasy. The only question you should ask yourself is: is AOK the appropriate tool/environment to do a DOOM scenario? The short and frank answer to that is "no", unless you want to focus more on modding than on the scenario itself. that's just my 2 cents on it. But I'm open to changing my opinion if your scenario is really good.

It sounds like most everyone agrees that DOOM qualifies as a type of 'fantasy.' I think it's a cool twist, and it'll be interesting to see how it fits in with the rest of the entries. In the end, it's effectiveness as a 'fantasy' scenario will be reflected in the judges' scores, so I see no reason to reject it from the outset. Those are my thoughts anyway.

It's up to the judges to confirm or not, but my guess is that would be fine. I'd make sure it's not just some time travel where real-world tanks or whatever appear in a medieval universe. Instead, it's probably best to have a fictional universe with some reason why a civilization is just more technologically advanced or created the machines through magic.

What do you mean by a hardcore version of a campaign? If it's just a remake of an ES campaign, probably not.
