General and Strategy Discussions: Frequently Asked Quesions

First off, welcome to Age of Kings Heaven's General and Strategy Discussions forum! This forum is a place where you may post about anything that's related to Age of Empires II: Age of Kings, or its expansion, Aoge of Conquerors, with a focus on the strategies used by players of all skill levels. For all Scenario Design, Modification or Scripting Questions, please read our Scenario Design & Modding forum. For all non-AoK/AoC questions or threads, please go to the Town's Crier, Age of Kings Heaven's community forum. For any questions regarding the site, or to give feedback on the site, please visit our Website Feedback forum.

If you're new to the forum (or to Age of Kings/its expansion), there are a couple things we'd like you to keep in mind before posting your question(s):

  1. Continue reading this FAQ. There's a decent chance your question may be answered.
  2. Check out our General FAQ on the main site. The answer to your question might be there.
  3. Search the Age of Kings Heaven University. There are numerous strategy articles, and various other articles to be found there.
  4. Search through Qazitory's AoK Strategy Articles Collection. There's lots to be found in this thread, so read carefully!
  5. Search the forum, either by thread author or subject. You can find the search function at the bottom of the forum.
  6. Post away. Do your best to make the post readable; this is a forum, not a chat room. You can take the time to think things through before posting them. More on this in a moment.

Forum Rules & Etiquitte
What are the forum rules, and where can I find them?
The rules for all Heavengames forums are found in the Code of Conduct, which you were supposed to read when you registered at a Heavengames site. Give it another read before posting.
What happens if I break the forum rules?
If you fail to comply with the rules (ie, "break" them), necessary steps will be taken, beginning with a warning for the first offense, and escalating each time an offense occurs, eventually resulting in a ban. Any punishments handed out are based solely on the moderators discretion. If you have questions about a moderator's decision, email them.

***NOTE: Any discussion of (or linking to) illegal downloading of Age of Kings or its expansion, as well as discussions of or links to no-CD cracks, key generators, trainers, and other piracy-related topics are strictly forbidden, and may result in an immediate and permanent ban from Heavengames forums.***What languages are permitted on this forum?

The official language of all HeavenGames forums is English. This is because the moderators may not understand foreign languages, and so cannot moderate them without considerable difficulty. If English is not your first language, that's fine. Just do your best, and we'll do our best to understand your question(s), and assist you in finding answers.I see some people using abbreviations; what do they mean?

Flush, grush, smush, ETK, Elbow, ECat, Klew, drush, UU. Confused? Check out our Abbreviations page, where you'll find most of the abbreviations used on the forums. If you've got suggestions, fire away! (And incidentally, the abbreviations I used at the start of this answer are just whatever ones came to mind; they' don't actually mean anything when strung together like that. )What about swearing/cursing?

Cursing and swearing is frowned upon, and if done often enough (or in an offensive manner), it will be dealt with appropriately. Bypassing the swear filter (ie, replacing one or more letters with an asterisk (*) or similar symbol, but still allowing the reader to determine the word in question) is against the Code of Conduct, and will be dealt with accordingly.I see people using smilies, and other text effects. How do I do that?

The answer to these questions can be found in the Forum FAQ. I'd recommend reading it before posting, although it's not mandatory. It also includes a handy guide to BBCode, which is what's used for the various text effects.What do the different colors in someone's name mean?

The four different colors represents a staff member, with the exception of blue names. Blue names denote a game developer. The other colors and their respective ranks are:
Seraph - Anyone with a name in this color is a webmaster at a Heavengames site. Age of Kings Heaven's co-webmasters are Aro and CrystalCrown.
Angel - This rank and colour denotes someone who has been a staff member for a while, and has more access to site content than cherubs.
Cherub - the lowest staff position, a cherub is usually only responsible for a few areas of the site.Who are the moderators of the General & Strategy Discussion forum?

Currently, the moderators are Steve, Aro and myself (sly guy). For a complete list of Age of Kings Heaven's staff, pleave visit the staff list.

General game Questions
Where do I get the latest patches?

You can find the 2.0a Patch for Age of Kings (no Conquerors) at Microsoft's website (clicking [ Protocol 'url=http' in URL is not supported ] will start the download automatically).
For The Conquerors, the latest official patch is 1.0c (download will start automatically).Where can I find guides and strategies?

Look in the University's Strategy articles. If what you're looking for isn't there, try searching through Qazitory's AoK Strategy Articles Collection.What's the best unit? Best civ?
Civen the right circumstances, each civilisation can shine, but it may fare very poorly in others. Likewise, many units are only used in certain situations, so there really isn't a "best" unit or civ.
I'm new to the game, and I want to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each of the civs. Is there some sort of summary?
Civilisations of the Ages by TheShadowDawn is a basic guide to the strenghts and weaknesses of each civ. Before you start playing online, make sure you read Steve's article on the Flush if you plan on playing Random Map games, or TOAO_Dave's DeathMatch Game Overview if you're planning on playing DM.

Another method of learning how the game is played is to watch some recorded games (often referred to as"recs") by top-level players. You can find recorded games on the Blacksmith, or try searching on clan websites, and so on. Please note that you must have the same version (patch) installed that was in use when the game was recorded, or else you cannot view the game.
I've downloaded a custom file from the Blacksmith, but I don't know where to put it. Help?
Here is where each of the files need to go to work properly:
.scn / .scx -> C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Age of Empires II/Scenario
.cpn / .cpx -> C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Age of Empires II/Campaign
.rms -> C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Age of Empires II/Random
.ai / .per -> C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Age of Empires II/AI
Saved Games -> C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Age of Empires II/Savegame

Please note that you cannot play custom files made using the Conquerors with Age of Kings, so if you don't have the expansion already, I suggest you buy it.

I've seen news items about varous forum parties, and whatnot, but I don't know what time that is in my time zone. Help?
AoKH's forums run on Eastern Standard Time (EST). You can find a time converter here.

Playing Online
How can I play Age of Kings against other people?
Our Playing Online FAQ explains the process Here's a summary: forward the appropriate ports on your router (if applicable), and then register/login to one of the main clients.

I've read the FAQ, but I still can't join games. Why not?
If it's a firewall issue, try disabling it.

My router asks for a username and password to forward ports. What is it?
Default usernames and passwords for most router models can be found here.

If you've got any other questions about troubleshooting, just post on the forums (after doing a search, of course), and someone should be able to help you find the answer.

Mac Questions
Thanks to n8mac.

Where can I find the latest patch?
Take a look at Destineer Studios.

What if I want the latest patch for Mac OS 8.6 - 10.2?
Head on over to Version Tracker and take a look around.

Can I play against PC users?
Software incompatibilities makes it impossible to play against PC users.

Where can I play with Mac users online?
Currently, GameRAnger is the only multiplayer client that allows Macs to play against each other.
Also note: The Windows version had an original called 'Age of Empires II The Age of Kings', and an expansion called 'The Conquerors'. When the Mac version was ported the two titles were combined and called 'Age of Empires II Gold'. The Windows patches won't work on the Mac.

Here's a link to the AoE2 Mac thread for more info.

If there's anything you want added to the FAQ, post in this thread and I'll add it if it's important enough.

Special thanks to Gordon, Aro and Dark Side of Day, who all hosted previous versions of this FAQ.

Just curious why you dropped the mention of the 1.0e patch when you mentioned the 1.0d patch which is also unofficial?

actually I don't see 1.0d mentioned here.
In the online playting guide it is.

Murloc is correct, the only patches I've linked to are 1.0c and 2.0a (for Age of Kings).

The reason 1.0e is not included is because it contains a no-cd patch, which is against our Code of Conduct.

Officially, 1.0c is the most recent microsoft patch.

Unofficially, D and E are two edits by a third-party coder with the intention of adding an anti-cheat.

Thus, for the purpose of a FAQ, sly-guy decided to mention 1.0c as the official patch, but on IGZ, people mention downloading 1.0e to make sure people don't cheat.

Just because sly-guy didn't say 1.0e was official for a FAQ thread doesn't mean 1.0e isn't used, or is (or not) OK to download for the purpose of playing on IGZ. (Hope I don't sound like I'm trying to undercut a mod, but I'm just saying that what is used for discussion here may not be the same as what is used for actual playing somewhere else.)

weren't the reasons for caring about allowing mention of the 1.0e patch about keeping relationships with the developer/publisher and isn't that now a non-issue?

The reason 1.0e is not included is because it contains a no-cd patch, which is against our Code of Conduct
When I first came here we weren't allowed to discuss it but I thought that CC (Or someone like that) said we could discuss it because so many people use it.

It actually isn't needed on IGZ. The IGZ anti-cheat 'merges' players with the 1.0c and 1.0e patch into path 'IGZ' in game.

Great job sly_guy, it looks wonderful.

Regarding the e patch: Back before the days of Gamepark even mentioning the e patch will get you into a lot of trouble. However, since Gamepark and later IGZ (in the early days) both required the e patch, CC got the all clear from Soccy that we can admit the things exists and even discuss it to a certain extent, though only for the purpose of multiplayer. If you use it solely for the purpose of avoiding the use of the CD, you are still in a lot of trouble.

AFAIK our current stance towards the e patch is that we can't really say we like it, but we can live with it, and we admit that we need it.

Alright, I've done a cursory scan of the available info, and I can't find a straight answer to this question: what are the required patches for online play (specifically IGZ and GRanger)? I can't tell for sure if 1.0c works or if I would need to get 1.0e to connect. (previously I've only done LAN)

IGZ works fine with either the c or e patch (they're merged into an IGZ patch in-game, so it's a non-issue), and many people on GR use 1.0c.

"Software incompatibilities makes it impossible to play against PC users." (Under MAC Questions)

I don't have a MAC but I believe MAC users can play PC users online using game ranger. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Destineer support
"Does Age of Empires II for the Macintosh support multiplayer gaming with players on Windows-compatible PCs?

Answer: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer support for cross-platform, multiplayer gaming at this time. However, players can log onto http://www.gameranger.comto compete in multiplayer scenarios with other Mac users on the Internet. LAN multiplayer gaming is supported between Macs using TCP/IP."

I think you are confusing the fact that GameRanger supports both Windows and Mac versions of AoK with the two versions being able to play each other. Believe me fatsheep11, I would love to see this happen as I would like to play with others on here, especially the Saturday parties. But there is an incompatibility in the software of the games themselves that make it impossible for them to connect with each other. I have heard that it is of no fault of MacSoft (the company who did the Mac conversion), rather a licensing disagreement between them and Microsoft. I don't know what part of the software that is, or even if it's true. But I have come to accept that it will never happen. Oh well.

@n8mac: if you would like to play online why don't you install windows in a second partition with bootcamp?
1. My Mac is PPC therefore can't use bootcamp or run Windows natively at all.
2. I will never own Windows because I don't want to.

Camels and Mamelukes don't get attack bonus against Cataphracts, is that true ?

Cataphract have 12 armor (Elite = 16) against cavalry, which means that they can nullify up to 12 extra attack points of every cavalry that have attack bonus against cavalry.
They also have 9 bonus attack (Elite = 12) against infantry, which means that Pikeman, for example, deal 9 less extra damage against Cataphract.

you don't put them in the disc itself, you put the in the folder the game created when you installed

by default this folder is in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II

Each file must be put into its proper place on your hard drive after the game is installed (and patched). You must have the same game version as the file was written in.
