Delightful song with naughty words. You have been advised.
Funny thing about words, though: You can't just make one up on a whim.
Oooh, Sipia just got on the bad side of all the political activists.

Ever hear of a language called English? We hear a non-English word we like or find funny? Boom, it's now an English word. We make up a random word that seems to follow syntatic rules? Boom, it's now a word. We make up a word that doesn't follow syntatic rules yet clearly does (looking at you, ghoti)? Boom, it's now a word.

Yes, very good. That is what I meant when I said it's 'prestigious' to adopt new words. When it's socially trendy to use words from another language, it can quickly catch on. This is pretty much the only way in which a new word from another language can become popular despite the existence of another perfectly good word for the exact same thing. This is why we Dutch now also talk about 'managers' rather than 'bedrijfsleiders' (literally 'company-leaders'); because English is just very "in" with Dutch businesspeople.

The problem is that referring to the US as America and anything related to it as American has already been established for many years now, not only in the many varieties of English across the world, but also in many other languages. It's solid as a rock, or as solid as words can get, anyhow. I don't see that getting trounced by another word any time soon, even if its use might annoy the other countries on the American continents.
We make up a random word that seems to follow syntatic rules? Boom, it's now a word.
But it only sticks if it has a purpose. Let's take an example: if I make a brand new invention and I introduce it to the world as a "Thingowhatter", and then that invention is adopted in use all over the world, then most languages will probably call it a Thingowhatter or some variation of that word as well. Not because it's a great name, but because it's a new concept and therefore there's not a word for it yet, so they might as well adopt the word I thought up for it. But if I randomly start calling rabbits "Smorples", everybody is gonna look at me as if I'm crazy. We already have a perfectly good word for rabbits, so there's no reason for a new one.

Of course, words change over time and might come to differ per dialect, socioeconomic strata, professional jargon, slang, or what-have-you. But generally speaking, a word doesn't get outright replaced by a new one for no reason. The most common reason for old words to fall out of use to such an extent that it necessitates a new one is because the old word has become taboo somehow.

Anyway, this has been Sippycup's Linguistics Corner, see you all next week.

Except the French, because they have to "keep the language pure." So it would be something like Le Chosequoidier.

Yep, exactly right. Insisting on keeping the language pure is very much not unlike insisting on keeping the bloodline pure.

It has been said that, for a language, 'stability' is synonymous with 'rigor mortis'.

It doesn't, AFAIK. Or at least I've never heard anyone complain about it.

Well, that's not true. I did see one thread well over a decade ago about it on OD where some newbie was all "can we not use 'American' to refer to someone from the United States? because that just confuses people". And the overwhelming 100% reply was "um, no? only you are confused", with even the non-Americans from the American continents agreeing, with at least one or two being all "yeah I'm from South America, but I'm not American".

Look, I get that Americans aren't going to get called United Stateans anytime soon in the English language, nor is that the end of the world. All I'm just saying is that, in my opinion, it would simply make more sense if we had a word for Americans that didn't also refer to anyone from the American continent.

Right now we have a situation where the use 'Southern American' likely refers to someone from the South of the United States, while 'South American' to someone from the southern continent of the Americas. Is that really ideal?

It would be nice if Canadians and Colombians and all the other American peoples could say they are proud Americans, as they may well be, without confusion ensuing about their non-existent affiliation with the United States. I mean in Spanish, that problem is already solved. You will never hear a US American referred to as an Americano in Colombia unless it is in the sense that they are from the American continent.

You US Americans don't need to get your knickers in a twist.

EDIT: Hilarity would ensue if, say, Brazil renamed themselves the Republic of America. Really they have every bit as much right to that name as the United States.

Well, I think the "tradition" also dates back to when the US was basically the sole generally recognized polity with "America" in the name. We kinda got it first.

EDIT: Bit of a long video, but this is a development of an issue that I've been following for a week or so.

That's just scuzzy.

I dunno. Are there Europeans who call themselves "proud Europeans" or Asians who call themselves "proud Asians"? Australia doesn't count here since the entire continent is one country.

I'm pretty sure there are proud Europeans. Not always of the pleasant variety, it must be conceded.

Proud Asians are rarer, because that continent is too large and populous, and home to too many disparate civilizations and cultures.

There is a proud tradition of Americanism in Latin American thought. You'd be surprised. Latin American writers struggled to carve out their own identity at a time when Europe was seen as the model for the world (liberal arrogance).

The continents are called North America and South America. Never heard of anyone using "Americans" as a term to encompass both, nor understand the use for it anyway.

It's as pretentious as calling Europeans and Asians "Eurasians" because their continents are connected by land.

Moreover, Brazil's official name is United States of Brazil, Mexico's is United States of Mexico, so it seems logical to call the residents of the United States of America "Americans".

The official name of Brazil is República Federativa do Brasil, but even if it were called the United States of Brazil, by your logic it would make as much sense to call Mexico the 'United States' as it does to refer to the US by that.

Whether the Americas are one or two continents depends on who you ask.

However, the concept of an American as a person from the American continent holds value because the American peoples, particularly the Hispanic American peoples, are united by a closely interlinked history and culture. Even the United States are part of a wider revolutionary American tradition.

Hi dude, what's your new work place?
Microsoft Support. Really nice, tight-knit little company in my home town. Sure beats food service!
Hi Thudunder! I just thought of you back in post 1656. Hope you're doing well.
Hey! Funny that you mentioned me so recently and inadvertently summoned me. Doing well, thanks for asking!
I tend to wonder what happened to people in Scenario Design when I was active there 2005-2008. AnastasiaKafka, BerserkerJerker, Ingo, newIdea, Thunder77, others from Tsunami Studios etc.
Oh my, I'm flattered having being put in the same breath as such design titans! Even though AK was rather critical of me, I do think I was, in my own way, a second-wave equivalent of her, being more of an influential figure who was passionate about the community than a very accomplished designer. Though not for a lack of wanting.

I was just such a young kid back then, scarcely a teenager when I registered in 2005. I spent many of my formative years here, and as I grew up I started becoming embarrassed of some moments I found exposing of myself, which is why I began distancing myself. Plus, you know, life and adulthood happens to everyone. I still daydream every now and then about the awesome, groundbreaking scenarios that never were, and wish that I could apply what maturity I have now back to when I had the time, passion, and relevance to devote to creating them. Yet such endeavors on this site did spark within me a creative energy in music and writing that I will carry with me for the rest of my life, and for that I am eternally thankful.
SD seems far too quiet these days. Not so surprising given the age of the game. I don't have any particular nostalgic ties to AoK itself -- there were many games I enjoyed -- but I do feel nostalgic for who I was back then. The precious first years of adulthood, which later got catastrophically thwarted by my psychosis/pseudo-schizophrenia which I'm still reeling from.
Sorry to hear you fell onto some rough times. Mental illness is a bitch. My partner suffers from a disassociative disorder and it makes things unnecessarily tough for her. I hope that you continue to recover and get the help you need. I'm sure anyone on this site would reach out a hand to help should you need someone.
