Crazy Kitsch Quest

By sissi

With over twelve thousand uploaded files, the Blacksmith holds an enormous variety of scenarios and campaigns: some emphasize story over everything else, some are nearly all action, some are brutally hard, others not very challenging and just good, easy fun… and then there is sissi’s Crazy Kitsch Quest, which makes you question your sanity, or, at the very least, if someone slipped something into your coffee.

“Crazy Kitsch Quest” is at once a musical, a comedy, a romantic fairytale and a well-balanced build and destroy scenario, with a big dose of French surrealism on top; it is truly one of a kind. The first scenario is a full-on cinematic, set to the tune of a humorous love song. You follow our two lovebirds, Brad Lancelot and Janet, as they rush around the map, setting off strange trigger sequences, running around a pond with a large heart made out of flowers, and watch a myriad of birds fly across the sky like a feathery kaleidoscope. Then you promptly lose the scenario, and are forced to cheat your way the next time around to progress to the playable part of the campaign.

Here you take on the role of Brad Lancelot once more, as he journeys across King Arthur’s strange realm looking for relics, all while French disco/pop music plays in your ears. At this point you will likely be peering deeply into the mug of coffee in your hand, looking for remains of the dissolved pills you just know have to be in there somewhere; but don’t fret, there’s nothing wrong with you, that’s just the way this crazy campaign is!

Beneath all the craziness, the campaign is a pretty simple, albeit rather well-balanced build and destroy-type scenario: you have to build up an army, journey across the land and bring back all the relics to Arthur’s monastery, and in doing so you will run into a host of Masters of the Templar, War Elephants and various other unique units, which your small army will have some trouble handling. The author doesn’t appear to care too much how you finish the scenario, however, as the instructions say that you can use cheats if you want to, and you can go about destroying everything, including allied towns, if you’re so inclined.

At its best, “Crazy Kitsch Quest” is a manic, thrilling and for AoK completely unique ride; even when the more typical gameplay becomes a bit tedious, you will more often than not find yourself marching to war with Jimmy Somerville’s “Comment Te Dire Adiue” playing in the background, making for a rather surreal experience.

It’s hard to describe it in any more detail than this, you will simply have to download it and experience it for yourself!
