P4 DM Wrap-Up…

The Zone’s latest Pentium 4 tournament has finished, with a nifty new PC going to Beast_of_peon, who aced the rest of the talented DM field to claim the grand prize! He met Zoltron_I2ook in the finals, and you can find the recording, along with a few others, over at MFO. You can also give the final results a look in the Zone brackets for the event, showing some big names taking early exits from this thirty-two player field. …ok, now have an Athlon tourney! ; )

Age Forums…

A couple of forum related items have come to light of late. Firstly, Myll_Slaghter is feeling generous. Act quickly while the feeling lasts an snag a free forum for your clan! You won’t have to deal with any ads or other catches, so jump on this opportunity quick like. Check out Slaghter’s post in the forum for more information.

Still on the subject of forums, WX_Intrigue has launched a board of his own dedicated to AOC. Drop in on his forums for a little strategy talk, or just to say “Howdy”! It’s fairly quiet there at the moment, perhaps a nice place to have a talk without too much interruption. …Slaghter may ask for your soul in exchange for a forum…just pretend he’s joking… ; )

DM P4 Finals…

The final thirty-two players in the Zone‘s DM tournament, with a lovely Pentium 4 system as the grand prize, will be facing off this evening to decide a winner. The list of finalists is pretty impressive, and includes the winner of our last DM event here at AOKH, RomanGladius. Best of luck to all, and stick around for the results! …quite a strong field of finalists…hopefully we can snatch some recordings… ; )

Blacksmith Feature: News…

We will be running featureless today, as our reviewer BrandNewCar has been given the day off to continue his birthday celebrations. He will be back with another featured selection from the Blacksmith next week, so we aren’t rid of him for long. Have a good one Car!

If you frequent the Blacksmith section of the site, you may well have noticed some database problems we’ve been having this week. They are off and on, a bit annoying, but will be dealt with when our server admin returns from his trip later this weekend.

Probably the last this all the scenario designers who are busy working on their entries need is another reminder, but due keep in mind the deadline for our Pretty Town Contest is tomorrow night. We will be posting the results at some point next week, so keep an eye out for them! …perhaps we’ll feature the winners… ; )

AOM Alpha Invites!

Quite a few forumers here and over at AOM Heaven have been reporting that they have received invitations to test the upcoming Alpha build of Age of Mythology from Ensemble Studios! Keep a close eye on your in-box, as you may be one of the lucky few to set foot on the AOM battlefield first. …all of the excited posts stalled our server for awhile today… ; )

PT Contest Deadline Coming…

For those of you who are feverishly working on completing your entry for the Pretty Town Contest, remember that the deadline is coming up quick. As this Friday, June 28th, draws to a close, no more entries will be accepted. Don’t leave it too late!

Remember, you can send your entry as either a campaign or scenario file, both are acceptable. The official deadline is 11:59PM EST on the 28th, and EST is GMT -5. Best of luck!

Ladder Standings…

Thankfully, all of those ties in ladder points have worked themselves out this week. Myll_Barka is still the ladder champion, and isn’t having to work too hard to defend the title right now. That may change with ChiChiri moving up the rankings pretty fast of late. No doubt it won’t be long until he takes a stab at the number one position.

As for Dark Side of Day‘s Ladder Warriors of the Week, there are some familiar faces to be found. Holeshot is back for more after a solid week of games in which he defeated some very strong players. hakigor is right up there as well, having played many a tough game in the last seven days, as well as S_A_S, who must hold the record for the most mentions as a Ladder Warrior. Good gaming guys!

Blacksmith Feature: The Nexus…

Before we turn things over to BrandNewCar for his weekly feature, we must announce that he is now apart of the staff here at AOKH! Car will be moderating our Scenario Design Forum, in addition to working on these great articles. Thanks for helping out dude! Now, on to the featured presentation, an oldie but a goodie…take it away Car:

Another week passes us by and time for another designer’s work is featured from the vast array of downloads from the Blacksmith. Lets get to it then..

The Nexus is a campaign based around a mysterious object, which is said to have no concept of what is it, for it is not from this world. The author, The Downward Spiral has written a very detailed description to his campaign, the full version can be found here. Here is an extract: –

“It was the year 1281, and chaotic turmoil had extended over the all possessions of Japan. First, a bloodline of profligate unmoral Mongols had been invading faultless villages and raiding military encampments. Although Japan was a hearty nation, the never-ending Mongol attacks began to whither down on the country’s defenses. Second, a dire cupidity for power caused profound corruption within the midst of the church. A silence of dark secrecy was hidden completely from all who inhabited Japan except those of superior rank. Lastly, a tattle of archaic immortality, The Nexus, danced across the lands of Japan and continued to be the topic of converse.”

Step into the shoes of Kitabatake and Minamoto as they seek to decipher this strange object’s legend and help save Japan and the Nexite’s from destruction and war. This campaign is a mix of various styles of game-play. It contains a staggering 8 scenarios, 2 of which you watch, and 6 are playable! The author deserves huge credit for taking so much time with it, and it seems a lot of hard work was invested whilst working on The Nexus.

As you can see this design, features a very prominent storyline, which is one of the features it scores full marks from in both reviews of The Nexus in the Blacksmith. The two reviews of The Nexus can be found here.

As shown in the reviews, people found this campaign to be a very enjoyable release. Looking back through some of the old work’s, they continue to make me smile and this one is no exception.

The final score of The Nexus campaign is a 4.9 out of a possible 5.0, interesting how both reviewers say how this design blew them away. All that is left for me to do is tell you of that The Downward Spiral tells you this has a “A spine shivering plot”, which it does, so now’s not the time to cower behind the safety of your headphones… ; )

Developer Salaries…

“So, how much money do you make?” Not a very tactful question, so leave it up to Game Developer Magazine to find out for you. Just how much do the lucky guys and gals who make our favourite games take home? Well if you’ve got a friend who’s a Technical Director…whew boy:

“Game Developer Magazine has published the results of its annual game developer salary survey in its July 2002 issue. The survey indicates the game development industry has remained healthy despite the downturn in the overall U.S. economy.

The average game programmer salary is $66,000. A technical director with six or more years experience earns an average of $104,000. Game artists earn an average of $61,000. A game designer with one year of experience earns an average of $52,000 – with the highest salary reported at $300,000.”

For just a little bit of a change, how does starting your DM event in the Dark Age sound? Well Ballistix is proposing a 2v2 Dark Age DM tournament and is looking for a little feedback on if it is of interest to us and when a good time to hold such an event would be. That’s certainly the most players we’ve ever listed on the top ten. There are just so many ties right now, including a trio of players stuck at 183 points. Hopefully things will shake up a little bit this week!

Some of the players who have been shaking things up lately have been named in Dark Side of Day‘s picks for the Ladder Warriors of the Week. Flank topped the list, having played ten games last week against some very talented players. Joining him are long time ladder player Flammifer and relative newcomer, but moving up the ranks fast, Holeshot! Well done all, and good luck with your ladder games this week! …interesting to note that the longest winning streak on the ladder right now is held by 154: KoR_Wormwood_ at twelve games…definitely moving up… ; )

AOM Beta News!

A teaser was posted early this morning announcing that an Age of Mythology beta test is not far away! A massive 10,000 people will be able to participate in this event, so your odds of getting in are much better than they were for the AOK beta. Visit AOM Heaven for the few details we have, and be sure to be around Monday when we get more information on how to get involved!

Virus Headaches…

This Klez virus is sure hanging on isn’t it? Months now after it made its debut, and a great many of us are still getting various copies of it in our in-boxes. Winston recently made an informative post in the forum regarding this virus, which includes some helpful links. If you haven’t got virus protection software, please do get some, and have a read of the post. Leaving your computer open to a virus creates problems for everyone as your system will be used to spread it. There really is no time like the present to grab a good anti-virus program, or update yours, as there is always something new cooking on the virus front, such as the JPEG Infector.

On a slightly different note, there is apparently a download out there pretending to be an Age of Mythology beta, which is actually a nasty virus. Play it safe and wait for the open beta folks. …can’t be far off now… ; )

Blacksmith Feature: Pretty Towns…

This week’s feature is being set aside to let all of you who are thinking of entering our Pretty Town map design contest know that the deadline for entries is just over two weeks away now. June 28th is coming up quick, and quite a few map designers, veterans and not so veteran alike, are currently crafting their entries. Make sure that your entry is sent in to before the deadline of 11:59pm EST, June 28. (EST = GMT-5)

If you are new to the scenario design scene, be sure to check out the SCN Punks fantastic article database. It has great resources, such as eye candy tips for creating cities, and lots of great AI write-ups. Their writings may inspire your to create a pretty town, or go on to bring your own campaign to life.

Koven vs Grunt…

Undoubtedly two of the best players in the world have met for a best of three series to see who’s the better player. (thanks MFO) Arch_Koven came out on top, beating CNS_Grunt two games in a row! The boys and girls of the Legion Clan have the recorded games available for download, which should make for some impressive viewing! …gimme Koven vs kmkm! ; )

Barka Back On Top…

After a lengthy championship tournament, caused by former champion Gary__Payton‘s retirement, things have been settled. Myll_Barka has defeated MoFo_Revolution in the finals to claim top spot on the AOKH Ladder for the third time. Congrats to Barka, and to Revolution, who will certainly be back to have another go at the championship.

This tournament has naturally shaken things up a fair bit at the top of the ladder. Check out the AOKH Ladder Standings for the latest updates. …thank you to Dark Side of Day for all of his work on the tournament… ; )

This Day In Age…

Remember back to those good ol’ days of waiting for Age of Kings to hit the shelves? Those long months of reading civilization showcases and hunting for new information in previews were tough, but back on this day in 1999 we had our first mention of that sweet word, BETA! Old Angel Omnivac quoted these paragraphs from the MS Monthly Mailer, a newsletter that is still around:

“Sometime around late June, Age of Empires II will officially hit Beta 2 status. What this entails for the average Age II fan is that the game itself is one step closer to release. But, that’s not all. Beta 2 also marks the first beta that will be distributed to notable gaming press. This means that a new crop of highly in-depth Age II previews will be hitting the Web and the magazine rack very soon.

While this is great news in and of itself, it’s not the best news we have for you this day. Around July, the event that most Age II fans have been waiting for will finally kick off – a beta sign up contest! That’s right folks, sometime this July around 20 gaming sites worldwide will participate in one of the most anticipated events of the year. At the moment, we don’t have anything more specific to tell you, but rest assured that news of this event will pick up around the end of June.”

As we wait for beta news on Age of Mythology now, three years later, the level of excitment brings back a great many memories. I don’t know if this Age II beta sign-up news holds any clues to what they have planned for AOM, especially since it sounds like they are heading for an open beta of some sort, but any real information may be seen in the timing. The Age II beta ran during the summer, and the game was on store shelves for the end of September. …we had some good times in that beta, until the Teuton TCs became commonplace… ; )

Zone P4 Tourney…

The latest Age II tournament is getting underway today. If you haven’t signed up yet, don’t worry as there are several preliminary events to weed out those who are unworthy of playing for the grand prize of a new Pentium 4 powered computer. This event is a Deathmatch affair on a full random map, so be ready for anything!

Pretty Town Contest…

There appears to be some interest in this sort of map design contest, and so after having asked around and finding some spiffy prizes, it’s on! The Pretty Town Contest will require designers to create a marvelous looking village, town, or city of some sort. This is an event where eye-candy is prized above all else, so you don’t need fancy trigger work or mods to be able to win. Visit the contest page for complete rules, requirements, and the prize list! …everyone who enters is up for a random give-away too…go on, dust off the scenario editor! ; )

Cheaters Hurting Sales?

Who wants to play a game where cheats are rampant? Well, not a lot of folks, and as this article on ZDNet discusses, this can hurt a game financially. Matt “Optimizer” Pritchard from Ensemble Studios is quoted more than a few times in the write-up:

“‘If the online component of the game is significant, you need someone thinking like a hacker up front,’ Pritchard said. ‘With ‘Age of Empires,’ we didn’t design the game thinking about all the things people could do to muck with it. We found later there were ways to re-architect it so that a person who was cheating became incompatible with all the people he was playing with, and then they’d kick him out. It was a lot of meticulous detail work, but I think it really contributed to the success of the game.’

Pritchard added that game developers could to do more to educate one another.

‘There’s not been a good sharing of information within the industry as far as dealing with cheating,’ Pritchard said. ‘The developers are happy for us to hang out in chat rooms and talk about C++ programming, but talking about cheats makes them nervous. If they admit to their games being hacked, they feel like they’re being opened up to liability.'”

Blacksmith Feature: The Last Samurai II…

We are turning things over to BrandNewCar once again for his picked of a worthy Ager created scenario or campaign. I am currently downloading this week’s selection, as I believe I played the first scenario in this pair and it was fantastic. Take it away Car:

Welcome to another week’s Blacksmith Feature of the Week. Sorry to the inconvenience of the last couple of weeks but we’re back up and running again now.

The Last Samurai II is a sequel to the The Last Samurai, both scored highly in the ‘Best of Aok‘ section of the Blacksmith.

You step into the shoes of Nobunaga, a samurai who is part of the Shimaru Clan, after having heard of nearby towns and cities being attacked you and your friend, Mutsurugi, are sent to investigate. With a grabbing plot that pulls you in, and a samurai feel to the events you play through it fails to disappoint. As you get further and further into the game it gets better and better, with scenes reminiscent of some famous samurai films.

The author, CerberusXXL who is also an Official Reviewer for Age of Kings Heaven has written an interesting extract:

“This is the sequel of The Last Samurai. The second episode takes place a few weeks after The Last Samurai. The town east of Osaka known as Yatsushiro has become a ghost town because its entire population has been wiped out. Now, Lord Shimaru has ordered Nobunaga and Mutsurugi to investigate Yatsushiro and decipher its dark secret.”

Sadly, CerberusXXL has been away from the designing scene for some time. The map design of his most recent work will blow you away as you take part in a truly epic campaign. All that lefts for me to say is that the review can be found here, where it is given an impressive 4.8 of out a possible 5. …In the words of the author “May the spirit of Bushido be with you”… ; )

E3 Critic Nominees!

At last! Their website seems to be a little behind, but Mike “Archangel” McCart has dug up the nominees for the Best of E3 Game Critics Award. MFO Reading…

There are a few new articles available on MrFixitOnline which will be of major interest to fans of recorded games. Firstly, they have made available an article and files for running all versions of AOK and AOC, a must for viewing old recorded games.

Fixit himself has also penned an article on recorded game features. A list of must haves and improvements for games that include this great feature.

Last but not least, if you plan on entering their Alliance Cup Tournament, which begins on June 15th, you had best hurry. There is room for 512 players to register, and they already have nearly 400 Agers signed up! Registration closes on June 13th. …wishing I hadn’t gotten rid of all my old AOK recordings now… ; )

Is Ensemble Studios taking a leap forward with Age of Mythology? You bet, and GameZone‘s direct comparison between the major features of the two games illustrates that point well. If you need a little convincing that the game isn’t just AOK with a 3D engine, definitely check out Moon‘s write-up!

The differences run far deeper than a single article can cover though. Never before has an Age series title had such vast differences between cultures. In AOK, building art is the main difference. AOM’s cultures though gather resources in difference ways, have difference units, different tech trees, and obviously the style of play between them is unique because of this. Three game manuals might not be a bad idea!

We found a great many differences between the games when we had the chance to get some hands on time with it at E3. If you missed the article, check out our AOM@E3 2002 wrap-up for more specifics. …or the fab cultures page for that matter… ; )

Ladder Recording Feature…

Big money AOK tournaments certainly haven’t gone anywhere. The team at MFO have arranged the brand new Alliance Cup, which sports a total of $3000 in prize money! The map is blind random, so close your eyes and get yourself registered. There’s a 512 player limit, and registration is already open:

  • Registration begins on June 1 and ends on June 13 12:00AM (midnight) EST. Late entries will not be admitted to the event.
  • Brackets for Round 1 will be posted on June 14 (Friday). Round one will end on June 23 (Sunday). All results for Round 1 must be posted on the Tournament Forum by June 24 (Monday) 8:00AM EST. Results submitted after this time will not be accepted.
  • Following rounds will proceed as completed. The details page will be updated to reflect these dates.

NAT/Router Headaches?

If you’ve been tearing your hair out because you are stuck behind NAT device and can’t play multiplayer games, the boys and girls of have a little something that may help you out. The best part, it works with Age II:

“PuffinSoft is happy to announce the first release of DXport. DXport is an app that will let multiple people play most games that use the Directplay network code (mostly Microsoft titles) behind a NAT/Router. Some of the games that have been tested are Dungeon Siege, MechWarrior 4, Age of Empires II, and Motocross Madness 2. Normally you are limited to a single client behind a NAT/Router unless your router supports UPnP. This may also be an option for people that don’t like the security issues with UPnP.”
